Bedtime safety check

Many fires in the home start overnight. By remembering to do a simple bedtime safety you can help to reduce the risk of fire in your home, or slow the spread of smoke or flames if a fire breaks out.

Before you go to bed...

  • check internal doors are closed - in the event of a fire, this can help prevent flames and smoke spreading to other rooms.
  • make sure all electrical items, including anything that uses a mains or USB charger, are switched off at the wall or unplugged – do not use any appliances overnight
  • know where your keys are to get out
  • turn off heaters and put a guard in front of open fires
  • always blow candles out before you leave the room
  • make sure you completely stub out your cigarette or cigar and never smoke in bed
  • switch off electric blankets and portable heaters
