Bedtime safety check
Many fires in the home start overnight. By remembering to do a simple bedtime safety you can help to reduce the risk of fire in your home, or slow the spread of smoke or flames if a fire breaks out.
Before you go to bed...
- check internal doors are closed - in the event of a fire, this can help prevent flames and smoke spreading to other rooms.
- make sure all electrical items, including anything that uses a mains or USB charger, are switched off at the wall or unplugged – do not use any appliances overnight
- know where your keys are to get out
- turn off heaters and put a guard in front of open fires
- always blow candles out before you leave the room
- make sure you completely stub out your cigarette or cigar and never smoke in bed
- switch off electric blankets and portable heaters
