A bedroom fire started accidentally at a flat in Deal after an unattended candle spread to other items.

Two fire engines attended the property in Sondes Road and firefighters rescued one woman, who was given oxygen for suspected smoke inhalation before being passed into the care of SECAmb.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

Following the incident, firefighters are reminding people to take extra care when lighting candles and to ensure the flame is fully out before leaving the room, or going to bed.

Candles should be placed in a suitable holder and on a non-flammable surface, well away from any flammable items such as curtains, bedding or clothing.

Also, remember to have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your property and to test it regularly.
