Testing and maintaining your warning systems

You are legally required to regularly test and maintain your fire-warning and/or your detection system.

This means making sure it is '...supervised by a named responsible person, who has been given enough authority and training to manage all aspects of the routine testing and scrutiny of the system'*.

Remember ...

Check

Control and indicating equipment should be checked every 24 hours. This enables you to spot any faults.

Test

Electrical systems - test by activating a manual call point (use a different one each time you test). This is usually done with the use of a test key. This enables you to check that your control equipment receives signals and activates warning alarms.

call point also known as break glass point

Service / maintain

Every six months your system should be serviced and maintained by a competent person. If you have a service contract with a specialist fire alarm company, they will undertake this.
