With businesses preparing to reopen after the Covid-19 lockdown, employers are being urged to ensure their workplace is safe for employees and customers to return. 

Since social distancing measures were put in place, it’s likely a number of changes would’ve been introduced in workplaces to help staff work while adhering to restrictions. 

To help businesses to remain fire compliant, Kent Fire and Rescue Service has put together a checklist of things to consider before allowing anyone back into premises, including: 

• Review your fire risk assessment
• Keep your escape routes clear and accessible
• Check your fire safety systems and equipment 
• Keep on top of housekeeping
• Arrange a staff training refresh 

KFRS’ Group Manager for Building Safety, Mark Woodward, said: “It’s really important for business to remain fire compliant after an extended time away from the workplace and in different circumstances. 

“It’s key to make sure all fire risk assessments and procedures are up-to-date and in place, ready for when employees and customers return. 

“Staff might be returning to a new layout, or you might have recruited new employees, so a training refresh would be advised, to make sure everyone knows the current and correct procedures of what to do in the event of a fire.” 

Other factors on the checklist include keeping escape routes clear and accessible, to check fire safety systems and equipment, such as fire alarms and emergency lighting, and to re-evaluate the number of trained in-house fire wardens. 

Given businesses have been closed, its possible companies have an increase in the amount of stock and deliveries. This should be stored safely and securely to reduce the risk of a fire, as well as away from any escape routes, both internally and externally.
