Beacons

If you are lighting a celebratory beacon for an event:

  • Make sure the structure and base of the beacon is sturdy
  • Make sure it’s well away from any fences, trees, buildings, or other structures
  • Avoid lighting a beacon in very high winds
  • Keep buckets of water or a hosepipe nearby in case the flames begin to spread
  • Always supervise the burning
  • Make sure children and pets are supervised
  • Do not burn plastics or metals or use flammable liquids, such as paraffin or petrol, to light the beacon
  • Call 999 immediately in an emergency
