Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to an out of control bonfire in Water Lane, Hawkhurst, Cranbrook. Two fire engines attended and crews used a hose reel jet and compressed air foam to put the fire out, which had spread to stacked timber and stored items from a small bonfire in high winds. Crews provided first aid to a man with minor burns and then handed him into the care of SECAmb paramedics.Following this fire, crews are urging people to avoid having bonfires in high winds, and to stay alert when having a bonfire. If you need to leave a bonfire unattended for any amount of time, or become distracted by another task, ask someone else to keep an eye on it for you, or extinguish it to prevent it becoming out of control. It’s always advisable to keep a hosepipe or bucket of water on standby in case flames start to spread, however it’s important not to put yourself in danger and to call 999 if it gets out of control.
