Fire at recycling site in Chatham

Update at 6:45pm, 23 October:

Firefighting operations are now complete at a recycling site at the Chatham Docks on St Mary’s Island, and people living near the area are no longer advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

At the height of the incident, there were eight fire engines and a water safety unit in attendance, and crews wearing breathing apparatus, used main jets to extinguished the flames. Crews will continue to re-visit the site to ensure all hotspots are dampened down.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause is not yet known but is believed to be accidental.

Update at 12.45pm, 23 October:

People are still being asked to keep their doors and windows closed in the Chatham Docks area on St Mary's Island.

This is due to smoke coming from a recycling site fire where crews are in attendance and working to reduce the fire.

This advice is set to be in place for the remainder of the day. Please share this information with any loved ones in the area who may not have access to the internet.
 

Update at 8:50am, 23 October:

This morning, people who live or work near the Chatham Docks on St Mary’s Island are still being advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to a large amount of smoke coming from a fire at a recycling site.

Two fire engines remain at the scene as well as a telehandler to remove the waste and reduce and chance of the fire spreading.

Update at 11pm, 22 October:

Advice to keep windows and doors closed for people who live near the Chatham Docks on St Mary’s Island remains in place.

The number of fire engines has now been reduced, with three still in attendance, and crews are making good progress extinguishing the fire at the recycling site.

People are still being advised to keep their windows and doors closed who live near the Chatham Docks on St Mary’s Island.

This is due to a large amount of smoke coming from a fire at a recycling site. Eight fire engines are at the scene and crews are working to extinguish the flames.

The volunteer response team are also in attendance.
